July 2022 Class Notes

’96 The Brightest Class

Bev Shaffer ‘ 96, is a Cleveland-based chef, recipe developer, author and culinary instructor. She will be recognized with the Grande Dame Lifetime Achievement Award by Les Dames d’Escoffer International (LDEI) on October 22, 2022 at their annual conference in New York City. “LDEI’s Grande Dame Award is one of the highest honors for a woman in food, beverage, and hospitality.”

’10 The Social Class

Mike Kovack ’10,  Medina County Auditor, refunded $5.5 million of savings from his office to all Medina County taxing entities, including schools, cities, and townships.  The refund comes from money Auditor Kovack’s office did not spend out of their real estate reappraisal allocation designated by the state.  The $5.5 million represents a record refund by the Medina County Auditor’s Office. Auditor Kovack was also a presenter for the annual County Auditors Association of Ohio last month in Granville, Ohio.  He is one of Ohio’s most senior county auditors and was a member of a panel discussion for new county auditors throughout the state.

 

’11 The Emerald Class

Deborah Poland ’11, accepted a position of Director of Foundation and Community Relations for the Akron Bar Association.

 

’13 The Visionary Class

Susan Ungham ’13 and her husband Dave will be celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary this July.

 

’15 The Bridge Builders Class

Vicky Nann ‘15 has been named to the Board of Directors of Atlas Assistance Dogs, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that fundamentally expands access to assistance dogs through its trainer programs.

 

’16 Silver Jubilee

Ben Pfahl ‘16 was promoted to CIO, Vice President of IT & Digitalization Region Americas at Schaeffler.

 

’21 Resilient

Matthew Neil ’21  was recently appointed to the Board of Trustees for “The Society.” The Society (SHC), The Society for Handicapped Citizens was founded in 1953 for the purpose of providing care, training, education, housing, recreation, and other services to people with developmental disabilities. The Society provides 24-hour care in nine group homes for adults with developmental disabilities.  In addition, services are provided to individuals living in the community.

 

’22 The Phoenix

Renee Ackim ’22 has accepted a new position with Huntington Bank as an Account Manager in their Insurance Division.

Lindsey Conrad ’22 was recently named to the Board of the Medina Recovery Center. He will also be celebrating the grand opening of his new Strongsville location!

Nathan Eppink ’22 has been reelected to fill a three-year term on the Board of the Ohio Parks & Recreation Association, a public interest organization representing more than 2,000 members across the state.

 

LEAD Institute

Roxana Rathbun LEAD ’22 was awarded the 2019-2020 Rising Star Award from the Northeast Ohio Regional Library System.  The Rising Star Award is awarded to a library employee who has no more than five years’ experience in libraries and has already had an impact on Northeast Ohio Libraries.  Roxana is a librarian at Medina County District Library at the Seville Branch.   “Since receiving my award I have gone on to be a part of Leadership Medina County’s LEAD Institute of which I graduated this past May 2022.  I value the Rising Star Award because it has shown me that I am an integral part of my workplace and community. I strive to continue to learn and grow in my position.​”

Robin Serwatka LEAD ’22 has accepted a new position as a Senior Account Manager at Delta Dental of Ohio as of June 6, 2022.
