Signature Class of 2025 and Junior Leaders Explore State Government in Columbus

On a crisp spring morning, the Signature Class and Junior Leaders of 2025 set off for Columbus to experience State Government Day—an immersive journey into the heart of Ohio’s legislative and judicial systems. The day offered more than just insight; it was a powerful reminder of each citizen’s vital role in shaping our government and the communities we call home.

Our first stop was the Supreme Court of Ohio, where we were welcomed into a building rich with history, symbolism, and civic pride. The morning’s agenda was packed with compelling presentations from:

  • Sylvio Mecone of TEAM NEO, who shared insights on economic development in Northeast Ohio
  • Darnita Bradley from JobsOhio, who discussed workforce and investment initiatives
  • Frank LaRose, Ohio Secretary of State, who inspired us with his dedication to civic engagement
  • Carrie Bartunek, Director of External Affairs for the Ohio Attorney General’s Office
  • Jonathan Fulkerson, Deputy Attorney General
  • Most memorably, Chief Justice Sharon L. Kennedy, who encouraged us to remember that these are our buildings—spaces that belong to all Ohioans and deserve our attention, respect, and participation

Following the presentations, we toured the Supreme Court building, appreciating its majestic architecture and the sense of ownership Justice Kennedy so passionately instilled in us.

Next, we made our way to the historic Athletic Club of Columbus for a networking lunch, graciously sponsored by Jeff Holland and Automation Tool and Die. Over a delicious meal, we heard from:

  • Max Kovacs, Northeast Ohio Regional Director for U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno
  • State Senator Mark Romanchuk, who gave us an honest look into state-level policymaking
  • State Representative Melanie Miller, who shared her journey in public service
  • Paul Kipfstuhl from Catholic Charities, whose advocacy and compassion for underserved communities inspired us all

The final leg of our journey brought us to the Ohio Statehouse, where history, governance, and vision converge. Among the highlights of the afternoon:

  • A thought-provoking talk by Lieutenant Governor Jim Tressel, who challenged us to think of leadership not as a title, but as the action of serving others
  • Jim Shaw, Director of External Affairs for Ohio Auditor of State Keith Faber, who shared key perspectives on accountability in government

We concluded the day with a guided tour of the Statehouse, taking in its breathtaking design and the stories woven into its walls.

State Government Day was more than an educational experience—it was a call to engage, understand, and lead with intention. A heartfelt thank you to all our speakers, sponsors, and planners who made the day not only possible but unforgettable.
